NorthC – VR Experience

Bigfish has been a proud partner of NorthC Datacenters in the development of their animations and other visuals for many years. With as many as 14 data centers in the Netherlands, it is the largest player in the Netherlands. Besides the Netherlands, NorthC is active in Germany and in Switzerland.
The demand from NorthC Data Centers

How can a VR experience help simplify complex information?

robot NorthC Datacenters

Bigfish has been a proud partner of NorthC Datacenters in the development of their animations and other visuals for many years. With as many as 14 data centers in the Netherlands, it is the largest player in the Netherlands. Besides the Netherlands, NorthC is active in Germany and in Switzerland.

The challenge often comes down to the same thing: making high-tech information manageable for an audience that wants to use NorthC’s services. Topics range from explaining how a data center works in the cloud to why NorthC’s data centers are CO2 neutral.

Since NorthC is regularly at trade shows and giving presentations, they asked Bigfish to think about an interactive solution to convey the services to the target audience. The solution: VR!

User interface

Key to a VR experience is guiding the user through the experience. Does the user know where to look? Are there elements to be touched or pressed? Can the user walk around or does it have a “fixed” position?

For NorthC, we developed a friendly floating robot that talks the user through the experience. We always made sure that the robot is next to the element that needs attention, but we also made the rest of the environment interesting with moving parts so that it really feels like an experience and not a one-dimensional presentation.

Previous projects for NorthC Datacenters

Creating a VR experience takes a lot of time and therefore often makes it a costly investment. Moreover, you’re not there yet if you have the “digital tool,” as you also need VR glasses and a computer with a good graphics card.

For NorthC Datacenters, we were able to save costs and time because we were able to reuse the high-quality 3D elements we developed for their animations in the VR environment. This had such an impact that we were able to develop this tool for less than half the normal cost.

The elaboration

The VR experience developed by Bigfish for NorthC Datacenters was a resounding success. At the trade show presentation, visitors could walk through the virtual data centers, interact with the systems and even see in real time how energy efficiency and data flow management work. The floating robot guide proved to be a crowd-pleaser, not only informing visitors but entertaining them as well.

Feedback from users was overwhelmingly positive. Visitors praised the interactive elements and detailed visualizations that gave them a clearer picture of what NorthC offers. This hands-on approach helped NorthC effectively communicate their technologies and make their complexities understandable to a wide audience.

The end result: a complex story simplified through a VR experience
